How to Wash Hair Toppers Properly (The Do’s & Don’ts)

Do’s

1. Do Detangle
To prevent shedding, gently comb the hair starting from the ends and work your way up to the top of the hair.

2. Do Rinse
Use cool or lukewarm clean water to rinse the topper hair. When rinsing, dip the hair topper into the water, holding onto the part (lace, mono, silk) area to minimize tangling.

3. Do Shampoo
Massage the organic or gentle sulfate-free shampoo (synthetic wig shampoo if it’s a synthetic topper) in your hands first to loosen. Then gently lather the shampoo evenly along with the hair as well as the cap in circular motions. After, use cool or lukewarm water to rinse from roots to ends. Finally, squeeze the topper hair remove excess water. Be sure to avoid twisting or wringing the hair and be extra delicate with the lace if it is a lace topper.

4. Do Condition
Towel blot the hair, and then distribute a medium amount of conditioner evenly along with the hair, making sure to avoid getting conditioner on the delicate knots. After, rinse the hair in cool water to seal the cuticle (if it’s a human hair topper) and add shine.

5. Do blow dry a human hair topper & airdry a synthetic topper
You can leave a synthetic topper to air dry overnight or blow-dry a human hair topper. Place your topper on a wig stand to blow dry or air dry it. Gently comb the hair starting from the ends and work your way up to the top of the hair. After it is dry, apply hair serum or leave-in conditioner through the hair. Avoid direct sunlight when blow-drying or air-drying a hair topper.
Don’ts:

 Don’t wash the hair topper too frequently. While washing the hair can help to keep it clean, it can also strip it of its moisture leading to brittleness.
 Don’t wash a hair topper while in the shower.
 Don’t rub conditioner directly onto the topper base, as this may cause the hair knots to loosen over time.
 Don’t use hot water when washing the topper hair.
 Don’t brush out tangles while the hair is still wet.
 Don’t wring or shake the hair to remove excess water.
 Don’t forget to condition the hair topper! Skipping this step accelerates hair dryness.
 Don’t place a wet topper on a Styrofoam head or a blockhead, as this can stretch the topper cap.
